I don’t know when my love affair with overhead bridges began. There’s just something about having a good vantage point that makes my heart quicken. I’d stand in the middle of the bridge and marvel at the world that is spread out before me – housing estates, roads, the horizon – and I am filled with wonder.
My youngling had never seen a sunrise before so I proposed we get up one morning to catch one. We left home when it was still dark out and made our way to an overhead bridge. We sat on the ground and huddled together like a couple of hobos. While we waited, we talked about popular animes, about school, about friends. We didn’t even notice the subtle shift in the light at first, the gradual lightening until the first blush of salmon appeared in the horizon. We then fell silent and watched colours blossom against the sky – bronze and violet and sapphire. That remains one of the best mornings of my life.
